Tuesday 19 August 2008

Katie came out of theatre at about 6pm. She is in quite alot of pain and very tired. She has a PCA (patient controlled analgesia) which is basically a button linked to a syringe full of morphine so she can give herself a shot when ever she wants! When I left her at 10.45 tonight she was quite drowsy so I hope she can get some sleep despite the pain.

She has a cut from in front of her ear - over and then down behind the ear to about 3cm above her collar bone. She has one drain in place which will hopefully come out in a couple of days.
The surgeon was sure that her facial nerve will be fine - once the swelling and bruising goes down around it. He was also confident he had taken all the suspicious glands out of her neck. He will see us on the 28th to discuss the histology results and prognosis.

If Katie agrees I will add a photo of her tomorrow but for now you can be comforted by the knowledge that she looks as beautiful as ever. She has been asking about the children and hopes to see them tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your cards, texts, emails and comments on here - we do read them all and they are a great help. Katie can access them on her blackberry in the hospital so keep them coming.

Hi Katie & Giles,

Glad to hear the op went well and that the surgeon thinks the facial nerve is ok. I'm sure you're both feeling the strain but at least something concrete has happened so now you know you are on the road to getting better and putting this terrible thing behind you. I'm thinking about you loads and wishing you the very best of luck. Keep smiling (or maybe not if it hurts too much right now). But I know you'll be smiling inside when you think of all the fun things you can do with your beautiful children as they help you come through this. Lots of love, Dawn

Delighted to hear that the op went well & that the Prof has given you encouraging news for once. I hope that the pain becomes more manageable soon - let the kids play with the morphine button and you soon won't feel a thing! I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Love to you all.

Hi Giles and Katie,
Malcolm and I are friends of Ursula and Chris.
I saw Ursula today and she said that all had gone well with your operation, which is great news. That's a good suggestion to let the children 'help' with the morphine button!
We wish you all the very best in your recovery.
