Katie's fight ended today at 10.15am while the snow fell outside. She was loved by so many and will be missed so much. But I know she is in a better place now, her suffering has ended. We will all still feel her love, fun, care and kindness as she looks over us from heaven. Her party will be the celebration she deserves. And with all my love she will rest in peace. XXX

A few weeks ago in St Paul's Cathedral, Alina asked if she could light a candle for Sophie's mummy. We will do the same tonight and will be thinking of you all.

I am so sorry that I didn't have longer to get to know Katie better, our children have made music together for the last couple of years. She was my Suzuki buddy, much better organised than me, making sure I had the right dates and times for things, helping out with my babies, sitting next to me at concerts and always a friendly, smiling face amongst the other parents.

This blog is an amazing testament to a very brave person who fought hard against a cruel illness. Her positivity and warmth shines through in every entry, even the ones that make more difficult reading.

Heaven got a new angel today,
I knew last night as the stars were twinkling extra bright,
Full of anticipation and guiding her way.

You will know the angel that arrived today,
She has long flowing blonde hair,
And radiates beauty from within,
She sits and plays the violin,
the harp is not for her.

Her loving family and friends weep,
She wasn’t theirs to keep,
But she will look down each day,
To watch her children play,

She is at peace now, in no more pain,
So no more tears, our loss is heavens gain.

Heaven got a new angel today,
We will miss you Katie.

To Giles and Family,

I've thought all night,
And I've thought all day,
Of what to write
and what to say.

I feel so sad, I sit and cry
and ask myself "why, oh, why
was Katie taken from us so soon?"
Her laugh, her smile lit up the room.

She was a beautiful person,
A wonderful friend,
Now her time on earth
Has come to an end.

I'll always remember,
I'll never forget
The times we have shared
From the moment we met.

She was special to many
A good friend to me
I will think of her often
- I'll miss you Katie.

Some words in hope to comfort you at this sad time

You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she’s gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she’d want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

She is probably making sure everyone is OK and looking after all the child angels - I would be delighted if she was looking out for my beautiful Bethany.

She will be a fantastic guardian angel for Sophie, Sam and Evie.

Lyrics from "Yesterday" by Leona Lewis

"They can take tomorrow and the plans we made,
they can take the music that we'll never play,
all the broken dreams,
take everything, just take it away,
but they can never have yesterday,

they can take the future that we'll never know they can take the places that we said we will go,
all the broken dreams take everything, just take it away,
but they can never have yesterday"

Dear Giles, Sophie, Sam and Evie and family

So sorry to hear of the loss of Katie, she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. We have found a poem which we thought was appropriate

Although you cannot see her
She is not far away
She is in your mind and memories
Today and every day

Life will go on without her
That's how it's meant to be
So make the most of it
For life is short - you see!

Let her love be your strength and anchor
Each and every day
To help you through this journey
That you take, come what may.

Lots of love

I am deeply sorry to hear that Katie has been taken from her loving, caring families touch today, though she will remain in the heart and mind of every persons path she crossed, looking at so far 96 entries all sharing their emotion is something for you all to be so proud of, no body wants to loose a friend, a loved one, a daughter, a mother and I am sure it will take many a lifetime to come to terms with the loss of this truly corageous , beautiful, graceful, strong, amazing, need I go on ! A pain of grief hardly to be endured
I am only beginning to learn

I am learning to look at your life again

I'm sure you'll feel her spirit & love still with you throughout your lives.

We have been touched by how devoted her family were to her and you could not have done any more to make these last weeks special and fulfilling for her - she really made the most of every moment and that's something we can all learn from her.

Dear Giles, Sophie, Sam & Evie

I don't think we could say anything different than what has already been posted today.

The words that keep being repeated are Brave, inspirational, Courage and determination which must already be showing in your 3 beautiful children.

Our son George (Sophie's class last year) came out with some very profound words which I think summed it up and they were "I used to see Katie smiling when she brought Sophie to school in her Yoga clothes! It's not called Katie's fight any more but she will always be Katie" What more could we say, so true and spoken by someone so young.

I hope Katie is now in Heaven out of pain and sending down lots of smiles to you all.

Our thoughts are with you all at this very sad time and we have learnt such alot from reading a beautifully written diary of such an amazing woman.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

Katie, you did not live in vain for you touched so many hearts by not pretending to be anybody else but yourself.

I was so so sorry to hear about Katie earlier today. She was one of my very dearest friends and I feel grateful to have so many happy memories of her over the 19 years we knew each other. Katie was always so positive about her life, her children, her family and her friends - and worked phenomenally hard at everything she did – always to great and successful effect. I know you will all be a great credit to Katie in the future and that her legacy will continue in all of you. This blog is a real testament to all that she meant to so many of her friends, and I hope that it will be a source of great comfort in the time to come.

Dear Giles,
I can't sleep.I woke at 3.30 a.m and am now writing for the first time on the blog.Waking early can sometimes be a time when ones troubles and anxieties come to the fore but that is not how I am feeling.I feel quite calm and peaceful and a sense that the struggle has ended.I am sure in my mind that this sense of release represents in some way the end of Katie's fight.
I think back to the first and last times that I saw Katie. Both occasions were at Castlegate Surgery. She made an indelible impression on me at Waring Robinson's[our former senior partner] retirement 'do' when you first introduced her to all of us.She wore a white trouser-suit and that together with her strikingly blonde hair made everyone's head turn. The last occasion was the Castlegate pre-Christmas lunch when she came along with Evie and was her usual bubbly self.Which image of her will we hold on to in the years to come? For me,the initial ice-cool Katie gave way to the warm loving Mother and work colleague and friend and that is how I will remember her.
Her passing is the saddest of events.I retire in 3 month's time after 30 years at Castlegate. What have I learnt in that time and what has Katie's Fight taught all of us? Humility is the first word that comes to mind.In all my years in practice -and I have witnessed many patients and their families struggle with adversity during that time- I have never seen such courage as Katie and you have shown in these last few months.I am lost in admiration for the way all of you most closely involved with her care have coped. My hat goes off to you and both sets of parents and siblings on both sides for the herculean efforts that have been made on Katie's behalf. No family could have done more for their loved one.
Katie's illness was cruel.I s there any source of solace or comfort for those left behind? I think we have all struggled with that one.My view is to use a quote from a popular film 'Notting Hill'.This line was spoken by the lady character-in her mid-thirties- confined to a wheelchair due to a road accident. She said and I quote 'The older I get and the more I see of life, the less I see rhyme or reason to events that befall each and everyone of us'.
Finally, and I am speaking for all of us at Castlegate, our hearts go out to you,Sophie,Sam and Evie and to all of your families.Katie will live on in all of us...........Laurie

Dear Giles, Sophie, Sam and Evie,
I hope you find a small shred of comfort from this poem.
1. When you feel a gentle breeze
Caress you when you sigh
I,ts a hug sent from Heaven
From a loved one way up high

2. If a soft and tender raindrop
Lands upon your nose
They,ve added a small kiss
As fragile as a rose.

3. If a song you hear fills you
With a feeling of sweet love
I,ts a hug sent from Heaven
From someone special up above.

4. If you awaken in the morning
To a bluebirds chirping song
It,s music sent from Heaven
To cheer you all day long.

5. If tiny little snowflakes
Land upon your face
I,ts a hug sent from Heaven
Trimmed with Angel lace.

6. So keep the joy in your heart
If you,re lonely my dear friend
Hugs that are sent from Heaven
A broken heart will mend.

Ever since we first met Katie, she has been constantly in our thoughts, even though our contact was brief. It has been a devastating experience that we have followed and shared from afar, but this must pale into insignificance compared to the events which led up to your tragic loss.
We all remember well the bubbly vivacious blonde having recently become a mother again for the third time whose vibrant personality touched our hearts and souls.
We are so very sad for your loss and have been deeply touched by the warmth, courage and fortitude that was Katie's trademark throughout this episode which prematurely extinguished the bright flame that shone within.

Giles

I found this poem on the internet and hope you don't mind if I put in on Katie's blog for Sophie, Sam & Evie.

Your Mother, Your Angel

You look back on memories you forgot you had,
And at times you'll smile even though it hurts so bad.

Your mother is a special woman and no one can take her place,
You'll find a piece of mind when you remember her smiling face.

Your mother is an angel now she flies high above the rest,
and in your hearts always and forever she will be the best.

She has earned her wings and it's time for her to fly,
I know it hurts no one is ever ready to say goodbye.

She knows you do not understand and that you cry at night,
But as you finally drift to sleep let her memory hold you tight.

She will be your gardian angel through the rest of your life,
Helping lead you on the path between what's wrong and right.

Your mother loves you so very much and her love will always remain true,
Please don't ever think for a second that your mother will forget you.

A mothers love is like no other in the whole world,
She has the most wonderful memories of a little boy and her girls.

She has taken them with her as she's flown away,
Up to Heaven free of pain which is her home to stay.

So although you can not see her and you wish she could be there,
Your mother can always hear you and your mother will always care.

A mother does not forget the two greatest loves of her life,
And she loved nothing more than being your mummy, and your daddy's wife.

She is so proud of her family and that's in her heart to stay,
Even though she's an angel and has had to fly away.

So as you cry tears remember your mothers love,
Being sent to you from her, from the beautiful Heaven above.

She will be there through your good times, she will be there through your bad,
She will be there when your happy, she will be there when your sad.

Your mother has become an angel now, it is her time to fly,
And you will never know how much it hurt for her to say goodbye.

But you were here for such great purpose,
Sent to teach us humility, courage and compassion...
